About Labradors
Labradors were invented centuries ago to swim rugged waters hour after hour in all weathers, retrieving waterfowl for the table. They're uniquely designed for the job with a muscled, barrelled buoyant body, a dense short waterproof coat, strong legs, strong jaws and a thick rudder tail. Behind their broad face and soft eyes, nestles the most endearing mind, always ready to play, always ready to work and always ready to learn.
They have a beauty, kindness, sensitivity and humour that is second to none. They're wonderful ith children, and you can trust them to be sensitive and kind. They're cheery souls, always ready fo a game and ever young at heart. They love life and enjoy training as they grow up.
Young labradors learn easily by watching other dogs, especially their elders. They mimic trick and skills, and respond to enthusiasm. Learning through play when tasks seem like fun is more effective than boring reptition and a stern voice. All pups have a short attention span, and natural humour, just like children. If they're constantly scolded they lose their initiative and sponteneity. Puppyhood is a fun time for Labradors and their owners.
Even without older dogs for role models, pups can be encouraged into the water as their human family paddles and swims with them. The idea is not to push or frighten pups, but rather relax, be patient and reward their companionship. More than anything, they want to be with you, and do what you're doing. They learn very early what the sound of human laughter means, and if they do something that pleases you, they'll want to do it again.
